How to attach a cuff to a sleeve (a tutorial for my lovely sewing classmates at FIT)

The final product:

1. You're going to sew the raw edge of the cuff to the bottom edge of the sleeve, as shown below.  Place the RIGHT side of the cuff (the part without the interfacing) on the WRONG side of the sleeve (the side with the seam).  (In the picture below, the sleeve is turned inside out.)

2. Pin the cuff to the edge, as shown below.  The sides of the cuff should extend about a quarter inch beyond the sides of the placket, as shown below.  You might think your cuff is too short, but keep reading, there's a little trick.

The trick is this:  one side of the placket is going to be folded - see below.  Pin the cuff onto the folded placket.

Below is a picture of the cuff pinned to the folded placket.  (The sleeve is pictured right-side out this time.)

3. Sew the cuff and the sleeve together, a quarter inch from the raw edges.  In terms of getting positioned to sew, have the sleeve facing right-side out, with the cuff fabric tucked inside (as shown above).  Sew the 1/4 line on the inside of the tube.

4.  Now that you've got the cuff attached to the sleeve, pull the cuff fabric out from the sleeve completely, and then fold the cuff in half on itself, toward the raw edge of the sleeve, as shown below.

Below is another view of the cuff folded in half, as described above.

5. Pin the edges of the cuff together in preparation for sewing.  You're going to sew shut the edges of the cuff that stick out past the sleeve plackets.  In the picture below, you'd be sewing along the red dotted lines.  (You can sew on the interfacing side or the other side - it doesn't matter.)

Below, getting ready to sew the cuff edges that extend past the placket.  I marked the line that I'm going to sew; your stitches should line up with the outside edge of the placket.

6. Sew (both edges of the cuff)!

7. Last steps: With the outside of the sleeve facing you, pin down the cuff to the sleeve, just above the stitches that you sewed when you first attached the cuff to the sleeve.  Top stitch (i.e., stitch on the outside of the garment) along the edge of the cuff.

You're done!
